Fran's Cup of Coffee

Who's Fran? Cook, mother confessor, boon companion, lover of the way books feel, friend, seeker of the present in the present. Fran's Cuppa Coffee is the diner of your dreams -- fern and wood, or chrome and Formica, or maybe driftwood and rope, since Fran often sets up shop on the Oregon coast. Come on in and let her lay a slice of pie on you.

The Universe cracks

The front page of the New York Times has a story about the void that was the universe before light. What came before? What comes after?

The human mind wants closure. There has to be an end. But if there is not, the universe grows a few billion years, contracts a few billion years, shrinks to a baseball, explodes, expands. What does that mean for those of us who live now, wear knit hats, eat, get fat, listen to rock on headphones as if we were supping at an electronic breast?

My, that kind of life can't go on forever. Sometime, the universe is going to crack.

"Hey, SuperJules," says a character in "Diva," one heck of a movie, as the hero is fleeing the mob, "Tu crack?"

A simple coffee drink now costs more than a glass of beer. Is there surer sign that the universe is out of whack?
